Cell Communication

Cell communication refers to the process in which a cell sends a message, through a medium, to another cell, resulting in a corresponding response, including:

  • Cell gap junction

A direct mode of communication between cells. Enables metabolic coupling or electrical coupling.

  • Cell recognition

Contact-dependent communication between cells. Refers to mutual recognition and identification of cells.

  • Chemical communication

In indirect cell communication, cells secrete some chemical substances (such as hormones) outside the cell, acting as signal molecules on target cells to regulate their functions.

Introduction to Signal Transduction

Cell signal transduction refers to the process in which cells sense the stimulation of information molecules through the cell membrane or intracellular receptors, and are converted by the intracellular signal transduction system, thereby affecting the biological function of cells. Water-soluble information molecules and prostaglandins (lipid-soluble) must first bind to cytosolic receptors, initiating a cascade of intracellular signal transduction to transduce extracellular signals across the membrane into the cell. Lipid-soluble information molecules can enter the cell, bind to cytoplasmic or nuclear receptors, and induce a specific cellular response by altering the transcriptional activity of target genes.
